HOMELESS IN SF

How might we improve the quick housing accessibility of SF Homelessness?

PROBLEM

There are significant differences in the medical systems of the United States and China. Many international students and local residents often struggle to understand how to navigate the process of visiting a doctor or obtaining medication while utilizing their insurance. Concerns about high costs and the time commitment involved frequently lead to missed opportunities for timely medical care and treatment.

This project seeks to address these challenges by offering a mobile app designed for convenience. The app will provide clear guidance on understand insurance benefits, and obtain the necessary medications, and schedule appointment with expertises.

INTERVIEW-COALITION ON HOMELESSNESS

Emitt

45, chief of homeless office at SF Coalition

Persona story: Lucas has been homeless since he was 9. Even though he doesn't do drugs, neither drink nor alcohol, he has no choice about it. “My life starts at my 21.” said by himself. In the homelessness community where he grew up, no one helped him, so he tried all of his time to find the shelters and food, and seek the chances to escape his situation.

Through the interview with Emit, we find…

  • Lack of Access to Help – Many homeless individuals struggle to find assistance and often don’t know where to seek support. Resources aren’t always visible or easy to access.

  • Hostile Homeless Community – The homeless community is often neither welcoming nor united, making survival even more challenging. There’s little support from others in similar situations.

  • Constant Struggle for Basic Needs – Finding food and shelter is a daily battle, requiring significant time and effort just to meet basic survival needs.

  • Limited Opportunities to Escape – Without guidance or external help, breaking out of homelessness is extremely difficult, even for those who are determined to improve their situation.
